The history of Comerio
The area where Comerio is located was reached by the Celts in the 4th century BC. Settlements were founded in a strategic position between Milan and Lake Maggiore and Lake Como. The settlement was called "Kunmaer" by the Celts. Over the years the name changed to "Gunmeri", "Gomeri", "Gomera", "Gomero", until the current name of Comerio. In the Middle Ages, Comerio became a rural municipality. During fascism, Barasso and Luvinate were united with Comerio, but became autonomous municipalities again after World War II. In 1946, entrepreneur Giovanni Borghi founded "SIRI", which today is better known as ''Ignis'', a company specializing in the production of household appliances. In 1991, the company was acquired by the Whirlpool Corporation of the United States.
What to visit in Comerio?
Civil architectures
There are several civil architectures to visit in Comerio. Among these, Villa Tatti Tallacchini and Villa Noseda Laugier. Villa Noseda Laugier was originally inside a park extending between the "Giococo hill" and the slopes of Campo dei Fiori. The residence, built in 1878, underwent some reworkings and enlargements at the beginning of the 1900s. The manor house, in the Mannerist style, has inside it a staircase on which a series of rooms are organized like a sort of Loggia.
Religious monuments
The Church of San Gottardo was built in 1566 and renovated over the centuries; inside there are preserved frescoes and works of art of relevance.
Infrastructure and Transport
From 1914 to 1940, Comerio hosted a stop of the Varese-Angera tram. Today the municipality of Comerio is served by the Ferrovienord Saronno-Laveno railway line through the Barasso-Comerio station.
Sports
The Tennis Club of Comerio, represented by Fausto Gardini, Nicola Pietrangeli, Orlando Sirola, won the men's Italian team championship in 1961 and 1962. In 1958, Comerio was the finish of stage 2 of the Giro d'Italia.
