Vaccolino

Vaccolino, a small rural town

Hi everyone! Today I'm going to talk about Vaccolino, a small rural town located in the province of Ferrara, divided between the municipalities of Comacchio and Lagosanto. The town has about 600 inhabitants and is located on the State Road 309 Romea, which connects Venice and Ravenna.

History of Vaccolino

Once known as San Giacomo or Le Celle, Vaccolino, despite being small, was made up of several villages that joined together to form "Vacolinum". This village was an important center for the rest and refreshment of travelers along the ancient Popilia Road, currently the State Road 309 Romea. In addition, it was a center for meditation for the Pomposian friars who lived in the "Celle". Today, almost nothing remains of these cells, except for a few ruins.

Vaccolino: a small rural village between history and nature.

The motte of Vaccolino

Once, the famous motte, small sand hills totally natural, were present in the small town. This is why Vaccolino is referred to as "Il Mott" by the inhabitants. Unfortunately, in the 1960s and 1970s, these dunes were almost all flattened to make way for new construction.

Monuments and places of interest

Three kilometers north of the town is the millennia-old Pomposa Abbey, a truly suggestive place worth visiting. In addition, in the rural area east of the Romea, you can find the Bertuzzi valley, the smallest part of the Comacchio valleys. If you have the opportunity, I recommend taking a tour of this area, where you can admire the beauty of nature and local wildlife.

Other projects and external links

I recommend the Valle Bertuzzi Oasis, a very interesting project that protects the nature and environment of this area. You can find more information on the Emilia-Romagna Region website.

Conclusions

In conclusion, if you are in the Ferrara area, I recommend taking a short break in Vaccolino. You can admire the beauty of the landscape and discover the history of this small village that has a lot to tell. And if you have time, don't miss the opportunity to visit the Pomposa Abbey and the Bertuzzi valley, they are truly unique places!
