Journey Through History and Nature in Colli sul Velino

The history

Colli sul Velino is a town rich in history, as evidenced by the discovery of an important and extensive prehistoric lakeside settlement at the site of Paduli. Little was known about the prehistoric site of Marruvium, but it was mentioned by Dionysius of Halicarnassus as a protohistoric city of the Aborigines, located between the island of Issa (now Montisola) and Terni. Thanks to the discovery of settlements, it was possible to identify the protohistoric settlement of Marruvium precisely in the area of Colli sul Velino.

In Grotte di San Nicola, the impressive remains of the Roman villa of Quinto Assio can be found, which hosted Cicero during the dispute between Reatini and Ternani about the alleged damages caused by the emissary of Rome.

Today the town is a small village located on the border with Umbria, not far from the Ternana national road.

The Church of S. Maria Maggiore

In 1818, in Colli di Labro, the church of Santissima Annunziata was converted into an autonomous parish, becoming the Church of S. Maria Maggiore. Before then, the inhabitants went to the church in Labro. The ancient church, of a baroque style, underwent major alterations during the restoration works of 1965.
