Vicarello

Welcome to Vicarello

Hello everyone! In this text, I will talk about Vicarello, a hamlet in the Italian municipality of Collesalvetti, located in the province of Livorno, in Tuscany. Vicarello is one of the most populous hamlets in the municipality and has a very interesting history dating back to Roman times.

History of Vicarello

The name "Vicarello" probably derives from the Latin word "vicus", which means "village". However, there is no single interpretation of the name. Vicarello was not a castle, but during the medieval period it was part of one of the 13 municipalities into which the current territory of Collesalvetti was divided. The first document referring to Vicarello dates back to 750 AD, when it was known as "Vico Bruci". Later, the noble family of Gherardesca gained control over part of the territory of Vicarello and also had a palace with a tower called Colombaia.

In 1409, Vicarello and Collesalvetti merged to form a single municipality. During the Medici period, Vicarello became part of the Podesteria of Rosignano Marittimo and then of the Vicariate of Lari. In 1476, Lorenzo de' Medici and Giuliano de' Medici acquired the estate of Vicarello together with that of nearby Collesalvetti, giving rise to the great Medici Villa of Collesalvetti. In the sixteenth century, the first attempts to reclaim the area to defeat malaria began. The construction of the Fosso Reale and the filling of Mortaiolo in the second half of the eighteenth century greatly improved the territory.
