Parrana San Giusto

Parrana San Giusto: a Hamlet in the Province of Livorno

Hello everyone! Today I will talk about Parrana San Giusto, a hamlet in the Italian municipality of Collesalvetti, in the province of Livorno, Tuscany.

History

As you may know, the origin of Parrana San Giusto dates back to at least 1109, as evidenced by the presence of the church dedicated to San Giusto. Over the centuries, the village has developed, initially counting 600 inhabitants distributed in the hamlets of San Giusto, Ceppeto, and Crocino. In addition, Parrana San Giusto had a public school.

Monuments and places of interest

In addition to the Church of San Giusto, which was rebuilt in the neoclassical style in the mid-1800s, the village also has the Colognole aqueduct, an 18th-century construction that satisfied the water needs of the city of Livorno. The aqueduct is still functioning, crossing the settlement and allowing the admiration of some arches such as that of Castellaccia. These arches were designed by Pasquale Poccianti, an architect and engineer, who was supposed to build an additional tank in that area.

Notes

If you are curious, I recommend reading some books that delve into the history and art of Collesalvetti and the surrounding area. In particular, I point out "Pasquale Poccianti and the Aqueduct of Livorno" by Dario Matteoni and "Historical and Artistic Guide to the City and Surroundings of Livorno" by G. Piombanti.
