Colle Umberto

Welcome to Colle Umberto!

Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about the beautiful municipality of Colle Umberto, in the heart of Treviso province, Veneto. With a little over 5000 inhabitants, Colle Umberto is a real hidden gem of the region, where nature is still the undisputed protagonist of the territory.

A charming location

The municipality is located on a morainic hill, at the foot of the Venetian Prealps, between Vittorio Veneto and Conegliano. The area is predominantly agricultural and famous for the production of the well-known Prosecco wine. Developed on the gentle slopes of the hills, it is easy to admire the cultivated areas and the beauty of the landscape. In fact, among the hills, Col di Manza is relevant, on the border with Castello Roganzuolo. Furthermore, the area is crossed by the Meschio river.

An interesting history

The history of Colle Umberto is very ancient and fascinating, dating back to distant times. Inhabited since prehistoric times, Colle Umberto was the homeland of the Paleoveneti, as evidenced by numerous archaeological finds. During the Roman era, the city was crossed by the communication artery that connected the large centers of Oderzo and Ceneda. Starting from the medieval period, its most significant orographic element, the hill, gave its name to the Municipality, as documented in various texts.

The beauty and richness of the area were sufficient to found the abbey of San Pietro Apostolo located on the hill and now the municipal seat. Founded by the Crociferi Fathers, it was later replaced by the Benedictine monks of Pomposa in 1074. Later, the abbey was transformed into a Commendatory Abbey and one of the abbots was Cardinal Carlo Borromeo.

Venice's dominion

Colle Umberto and San Martino were part of the feud of the Caminesi until 1337, when they passed under the dominion of Venice until 1797. During this period, Colle became a place of great environmental and landscape interest thanks to the safety and well-being guaranteed by the Serenissima. For this reason, many noble families from Venice chose to erect their country residences (Ville Venete) there. In 1773, the abbey passed under the administration of the Bishop of Ceneda, of which it became the summer residence.

During the French domination of 1797 and the Austrian one (1797-1805), Colle and San Martino retained their administrative autonomy. With the law of December 22, 1807 of the Kingdom of Italy, the Municipalities of Colle and San Martino were established. Three years later, both became fractions of the Municipality of Ceneda. They returned under Austrian domination until the annexation of Veneto to the Kingdom of Italy in 1866.

Conclusions

In summary, Colle Umberto is a jewel immersed in nature. Its ancient and fascinating history, the enchanting location, and the beauty of the landscape make it stand out as a hidden pearl of Veneto. If you are looking for a unique place to enjoy the beauty of nature and art, Colle Umberto is the place for you!
