Piedicolle

Piedicolle: a village among the Umbrian hills

Welcome to Piedicolle, a small hamlet of the municipality of Collazzone, located in the province of Perugia. With its 127 inhabitants and its 324 meters above sea level, the village is a real hidden gem among the Umbrian hills.

Origins of the name

The name Piedicolle derives from the position of the village, which is located at the foot of the hill of Collazzone. Although the village is situated on a hill, the reference hill is located in a higher position than Piedicolle.

History

The village of Piedicolle has medieval origins and was rebuilt in 1544 by Mariotto da Marsciano, after being devastated by Niccolò Piccinino in 1437. Despite the passing of time, the village has preserved the medieval walls intact, which still surround the historic center.

Monuments and places of interest

Among Piedicolle's most important monuments we find the Church of Giacomo il Maggiore, built between the 16th and 17th centuries, and the City Walls, also dating back to the 16th century. The Church of Giacomo il Maggiore, once equipped with five altars inside, now has a single altar and preserves the beautiful Baptismal Font in stone from 1632.

Another place of interest is the Church of Madonna dell'Acquasanta, decorated with an anonymous fresco from the mid-16th century, representing the Virgin Mary, Baby Jesus, Saint Sebastian, Saint Rocco, and many other saints.

Events

Every year, several events are organized in Piedicolle, including the "San Giacomo Maggiore" indoor soccer tournament, which attracts teams from all over the region, and the celebration of Sant'Antonio, celebrated on January 17th with the blessing of all the animals on the village square.

Conclusion

Piedicolle is a charming place, perfect for those seeking peace and quiet away from the chaos of the city. With its historical monuments, traditional events, and privileged location among the Umbrian hills, the village of Piedicolle represents a must-see stop for anyone wanting to discover the heart of the region.
