Colico

Greetings

Hello friends! Today we will talk about Colico, a scattered municipality in Lombardy.

Physical geography

Colico is located at the intersection of important roads such as the Strada statale 36 del Lago di Como, which connects Milan and Brianza with Lake Como and Valchiavenna, and the SS 38 dello Stelvio. The locality is situated on the last part of the eastern shore of Lake Como, dominated by the imposing Monte Legnone which at 2609 meters is the highest mountain in the province of Lecco. This area is also famous for its "montecchi," small hills that rise above the alluvial deposits of the Inganna and Perlino conoids.

Colico: Lombard treasure on Lake Como

Origin of the name

There are several hypotheses about the origin of the name "Colico," but the most credited one derives it from the geographical location of the place as "caput lacus," meaning "at the head of the lake."

History

Given Colico's privileged position, in the past, this area was the center of a flourishing settlement of inhabitants. However, the history of Colico is linked to the presence of the province of Como and the diocese of Como.

Tourism

Today, Colico is a popular summer lake resort and is the most important center of Alto Lario. Here, one can find good hospitality facilities, as well as natural beauties such as the Natural Reserve of Pian di Spagna, a migration corridor for birds, which attracts visitors from all over the world. In addition, in 2006 and 2008, Colico hosted the Italian stage of the Kitesurfing World Cup.

Conclusion

I hope you enjoyed learning more about Colico, this beautiful location at the end of Lake Como. I can't wait to visit again soon, perhaps to attend the next Italian stage of the Kitesurfing World Cup. Thank you for reading, see you soon!
