Physical geography

Territory

Colfelice is located between the hills of the Liri River to the west and the Melfa River to the east, and encompasses a flat area crossed by the Rio Proibito and Rio Sottile rivers. The name of the municipality derives from the merging of two villages, Coldragone and Villafelice, although the town hall is in Coldragone. The inhabited center, however, is known only as Colfelice.

Climate

The climate of Colfelice is Mediterranean with strong continental features, due to the mountain range of the Aurunci Mountains that separates the municipality from the sea. Colfelice is nestled in the middle of the Liri River valley to the west and the Apennines to the east, creating strong temperature variations throughout the day and the seasons, with temperature differences of over 15°C in a single sunny day. Thunderstorms are common during summer, with frequent dense fog, while night-time frosts are common during winter, with an average of 1299mm of rainfall, mainly during autumn and winter.

History

The territory of Colfelice has always been linked to Rocca d'Arce. With the conquest of the Liri River by Duke Giacomo Boncompagni, the center of the municipality was built with the help of architect Giulio Savorgnan and completed in 1583. The coat of arms, depicting the image of a green dragon, tongued, illuminated in red, was adopted in the municipal coat of arms. During World War II, particularly on January 22, 1944, Colfelice suffered air bombings that destroyed the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista and killed 34 people.

Conclusion

Colfelice is a municipality with deep roots in the history of Lazio. Its physical geography and climate make it a unique place to visit and appreciate. The history of Colfelice offers an image of life in the past and how people adapted to different situations.
