The territory of Cogórno is located between the lower Val Fontanabuona and Val Graveglia. Its main urban settlement develops along the hydrographic basin of the left bank of the Entella River and the hills east of Genoa. Discover the Pre-Roman History

The history of Cogórno dates back to the pre-Roman era. It was later owned by the lords of Cogorno, descendants of the Fieschi family who ceded the feudal estate to the Republic of Genoa in 1203. The alliance with the Pontiffs Pope Innocent IV and Pope Adrian V, both from the Fieschi family branch, allowed the construction of the Basilica of the Fieschi. In 1797, with the French domination, Cogórno returned from the Ligurian Republic to the department of Entella. In 1815, it was incorporated into the Kingdom of Sardinia.

The banner and coat of arms of Cogórno were granted in 1983. The tower represents the symbol of the noble family of the Cogorno, the black pickaxe represents the ancient extraction of slate from Mount San Giacomo, and finally the church represents the Romanesque Basilica of the Fieschi of San Salvatore.

Visit the Monuments and Places of Interest

Cogórno is a destination rich in monuments and places of interest. The Church of San Lorenzo is a parish building from the 17th century, along with the tall bell tower. There is a polyptych by Giovanni Mazone depicting Saint Lawrence martyr with the saints. In addition, there is a wooden choir of the 19th century in the apse. The Oratory of San Giovanni Battista is a structure dating back to the second half of the 15th century, home to an ancient confraternity of the Disciplinants. The Basilica of the Fieschi of San Salvatore is one of the most representative places in the city.
