Coggiola: History and Symbols
Hello friends, today I will talk to you about Coggiola, a municipality in the province of Biella, Piedmont. With a population of 1644 inhabitants, the city has a long history. Coggiola was known as "Cozola" or "Codiola" and was first mentioned in a document from 1152 in which the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa donated some localities, including Coggiola, to the Bishop of Vercelli.
In 1243, the papal legate Gregory of Montelongo gave Coggiola to the Municipality of Vercelli, along with other centers near the Cervo and Sesia rivers, which were part of the feudalism of Biella. In 1300, it was given as a fief to the Meschiati of Biella and in 1306 it was burned down by Fra' Dolcino and his followers along with other centers in the surrounding area. However, the town was rebuilt by the Alciati, nobles from Vercelli, in 1340. In addition, it was given as a fief to the counts Mocchia di Coggiola of Cuneo.
In 1408, it passed from the Bishops of Vercelli to the Duchy of Savoy, together with Sostegno, Lessona, and Benna, and in 1517 the first municipal statute was approved by Duke Charles III of Savoy. In 1798, during the French occupation, Coggiola raised the tree of liberty. In 1911, the footwear company Fila was founded in the city.
Coggiola also has a coat of arms and a banner recognized by the Presidential Decree of October 11, 1972. The coat of arms is composed of five bees that symbolize the industriousness of the valley dwellers and their commitment to textile industrial activities, pastoralism, and the care of the forest heritage.
