Beano

A tour in Beano: history and monuments

Hello everyone! Today I'm taking you on a tour of Beano, a village in the municipality of Codroipo in the beautiful region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The name of this town comes from the Roman era, when there was a villa belonging to the De Belli family here.

In the past, Beano was also known as "Bean des Muinies," because it was home to a convent. In the village, you can find some very interesting historical monuments that are worth a visit.

Origins: the name and the settlement

As we mentioned, the name Beano comes from the Latin bellianum. In the early Middle Ages, there was a convent here that gave the name to the village, Bean des Muinies. In 1370, Beano was surrounded by a curtain wall to defend it from Turkish incursions. The remains of this wall can still be seen today.

In the village of Beano, there is a small church dating back to the 16th century and a house where Napoleon stayed for one night during the days leading up to the Campoformio Treaty. But the most eye-catching thing is the military fort built between 1909 and 1910, which is part of the fortification work of the lower Tagliamento River. The fort has been well preserved and was used as an Italian army powder magazine until a few years ago.

The 1903 train accident

Unfortunately, Beano has a sad notoriety because of the train accident that occurred on August 27, 1903, between a freight train and a military convoy. 13 people, mostly military personnel, died in the disaster and 66 were injured. King Vittorio Emanuele III also intervened at the site. Today, in memory of the disaster, you can see a monument in the countryside near the railway.

For those who want to delve deeper, I recommend reading the books "Codroipo and its territory" and "Folgaria 1901-1918. With the Beano fort in the context of the Baron Pollio's Work."

Other projects

If you enjoyed this brief presentation of Beano, I recommend visiting the village in person and taking a tour of the surrounding area. Codroipo and Friuli-Venezia Giulia truly have a lot to offer!
