Mondondone

Welcome to Mondondone!

Welcome to Mondondone, a hamlet of the municipality of Codevilla, located on the hill of Oltrepò Pavese. In this article, we will discover the history of Mondondone, its monuments, and the natural attractions that can be found in this area.

History

The toponym "Montedendonum" dates back to the period between the Malaspina, counts of Tortona, and the Estensi. A castle already existed in 996, and a sales deed from 1141 mentions goods belonging to the place under the county of Tortona. In 1164, Pavia acquired the political domain of Mondondone, but the monastery of the Senator maintained the lordship and appointed the mayor.

In the fourteenth century, Matteo Visconti and Azzone Visconti, with the help of the Beccaria, took possession of Mondondone and fortified it. In 1412, the Mondondone team was assigned to Rainaldo Beccaria as a fief. In 1610, the fief was sold to the Rovida counts of Pavia until the end of feudalism in 1797.

Mondondone was the capital of the municipality until the establishment of the province of Voghera, when the village was reduced to a hamlet.

Mondondone: History, Monuments, and Fossils

Monuments and places of interest

Mondondone is a hidden treasure of historical and religious monuments. Here are two primary points of interest:

Fossils and gypsum

In the past century, Mondondone was known for its gypsum quarry. Here numerous fossils and casts of shells were found, evidence of the ancient presence of the sea in this place during the Zanclean flood. Today, the quarry is closed to the public, but some fossils can still be found around the area.

Notes

Mondondone has a very rich and interesting history and was a place of great importance in the past. Although it has been reduced to a hamlet, it can still be appreciated for its beauty and its historical and cultural heritage.
