Hi friends! Today I will talk to you about the beautiful city of Turin. It is the fourth largest municipality in Italy with a population of over 840,000 inhabitants and is located in the Piemonte region. Turin is also the capital of the metropolitan city of Turin and is one of the major economic, cultural, tourist and university hubs of the country. In this summary, I will take a look at the physical geography, history, and what makes Turin such a special place.

Physical Geography

Turin is located in a plain that is delimited by the rivers Stura di Lanzo, Sangone and Po. The Po, the largest of the three rivers, crosses the city from south to north. Turin faces the alpine valleys of Val di Susa, Valli di Lanzo, and Val Sangone. These valleys allow tourists to reach the city from the French border.

History

The history of Turin dates back to the 3rd century BC when it was founded by the Taurini. It was then transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus in the 1st century BC. After the Ostrogothic rule, it was the capital of the important Duchy of Turin. In the 11th century, it passed under the nominal lordship of the House of Savoy, who became its effective rulers in the 15th century. In 1563, the city became the capital of the Duchy of Savoy. In 1720, it became the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia (which included much of Piedmont, Liguria, and Corsica), and then became the first capital of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861.
