Mechel: A Special Village of Cles

Hello friends! Today I will talk to you about a very interesting village in the municipality of Cles, in the autonomous province of Trento. It's called Mechel and it was an autonomous municipality until 1928. I'll tell you about its history, its monuments, and places of interest.

History

As I already mentioned, Mechel was an autonomous municipality until 1928 when it was annexed to Cles. Its history is very ancient, and its geographical location has made it strategically important.

Mechel: history and monuments of a Trentino village.

Monuments and Places of Interest

Religious architecture

Among the most important monuments of Mechel, there are definitely its churches. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is documented since 1226 and was rebuilt in the last quarter of the 16th century. The Church of San Lorenzo, instead, was documented towards the end of the 14th century and was rebuilt in the first quarter of the 16th century.

Military architecture

Another very interesting attraction of Mechel is the Castel Firmian, a medieval fortress built in the 15th century on the ruins of a previous castle.

Gallery

If you want to see the beauty of Mechel with your own eyes, I recommend you take a look at the gallery below. You can admire Castel Firmian, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, and a statue of Hercules found in Mechel.

Notes

If you want more information on the history and monuments of Mechel, I recommend consulting the sources indicated in the notes and bibliography.

Bibliography

Among the sources I recommend consulting if you want to know Mechel in detail, there are "The villages of the Municipality of Cles" by Giovanni Battista Giovanelli and "The Castles of Trentino: Trento and Monte Bondone - The Adige Valley and the Sarca and Chiese Valleys" by Andrea Canazza.

Other projects

You can find further information on Mechel on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and many other websites dedicated to tourism in Trentino-Alto Adige. You won't regret it!
