Hi, let me tell you about the province of Pordenone!

The province of Pordenone, located in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, was established in 1968 by separating from the province of Udine and later abolished as a local entity on September 30, 2017.

Physical geography

This province is a mountainous area bordering the province of Udine to the east, Veneto to the west, Carnia to the north and northeast, and the Veneto-Friulian plain to the south. As it is not bathed by the Adriatic Sea, it is the only province in Friuli-Venezia Giulia that does not have outlets to the sea. The territory is characterized by a vast hilly area, the Friulian plain, and the Carnic Pre-Alps, which host the Friulian Dolomites. In this landscape lies Piancavallo, a renowned ski resort.

Valleys

Among the valleys to visit are Val d'Arzino, Val Cosa, Val Tramontina, Val Colvera, Val Cellina, Val Cimoliana, Val Settimana, Valle del Vajont, and Val Zemola.

Hydrography

The most important rivers in the province of Pordenone are Tagliamento, Livenza, Cellina, Meduna, and Noncello. Another characteristic feature of the territory is the numerous lakes, such as Lake Barcis, Lake Ravedis, Lake dei Tramonti, Lake Cà Selva, Lake Cà Zul, and Lake del Vajont.

Environment

In the province of Pordenone, there are several nature reserves that testify to the beauty of Friulian nature, such as the natural park of the Friulian Dolomites, the natural reserve of the Prescudin forest, the natural reserve of the Cellina canyon, and the Magredi di San Quirino. Moreover, it is possible to visit the sulphurous springs of Anduins, the Green Caves of Pradis, and Campone Caves for an adventure and discovery experience.

History

In 1964, a district of Pordenone was created within the province of Udine and then, in 1968, the city was promoted to the capital of the new province of Pordenone. Initially, the license plate code planned was PO, but the council of Prato had to intervene asking for a change, otherwise Perugia would have lost the possibility of creating the province code with the name of the capital city. Finally, the Pordenone City Council decided on PN, an acronym for Portus Naonis, the ancient Latin name of the city.

In conclusion, the province of Pordenone is a charming and peaceful place immersed in greenery and nature. If you like discovering enchanting places and hiking in the mountains, this province is perfect for you!
