History
Ancient times
The territory surrounding Civitella Alfedena has been inhabited by humans since the Upper Paleolithic period. What we know today as Camosciara used to be a preferred destination of hunters who came here to hunt prey and find flint. It is also known that agriculture and animal husbandry were practiced in this area since the first millennium BC.
Middle Ages
The settlement of Civitella Alfedena dates back to the 15th century, when the population of Rocca Intramonti moved here to escape enemy raids and settle in a safer place. With the increasing demand for sheep's meat, the area experienced significant economic growth, becoming one of the most important transhumant breeding centers in central Italy.
Contemporary age
In 1853, due to the low population, Civitella Alfedena was merged with the municipality of Villetta Barrea. The boom of overseas emigration, which reached its peak between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, caused a decline in the local economy. During World War II, Civitella Alfedena was close to the front line of the Gustav line, and the war left a profound mark on the community. After the war, many inhabitants moved elsewhere in search of a better life, leading to a gradual decrease in the population.
