The province of Macerata: an overview
Hello everyone! Today I will be talking to you about the province of Macerata, a splendid region in Marche with an area of almost 2,800 km² and a population of around 303,684 inhabitants. With its namesake capital, Macerata, the province is the largest in the region, bordering the Adriatic Sea to the east and Umbria to the west.
Physical geography
The territory of the province of Macerata is predominantly hilly, with 67.7% of the surface area, while the remaining 32.3% is mountainous. The province is home to three mountain community unions: Potenza Esino Musone Mountain Community Union, Marca di Camerino Mountain Community Union, and Monti Azzurri Mountain Community Union. Since 2004, the year of the establishment of the province of Fermo, Macerata is the only province in Marche to border three other provinces of the same region: Ancona to the north, Ascoli Piceno to the southwest, and Fermo to the south. In addition to its natural geographic borders, the territory also extends to the Valnerina (Visso), which represents the main "border crossing" of Marche.
Economy
Like many Italian provinces, there are numerous highly specialized small companies in Macerata that cover various economic sectors. One of the most significant sectors is the production of footwear. In 2006, the Bank of the Province of Macerata was established.
Infrastructure and transport
Before the automobile era, the province of Macerata was crossed by several historic roads that led to Rome. The most important was the Lauretana Way (Umbria-Marche), which entered Marche through the Colfiorito Plateau and reached Tolentino along the Chienti Valley before heading towards the Santa Casa sanctuary and then the port of Ancona. With the advent of trains, the Rome-Ancona Railway line through the Fossato di Vico-Fabriano-Vall'Esina Pass took away the province's ambitions to see a railway artery directly connecting the Italian capital. Nevertheless, the Province of Macerata is well connected thanks to the Adriatic Railway, which runs parallel to the sea.
Conclusions
The province of Macerata boasts a varied geography, from the fascinating mountain territory to the hills that offer splendid views of the Adriatic Sea. The region's economy is supported by several specialized companies, particularly in the footwear sector. Thanks to the Adriatic Railway, the province is well connected with the rest of the country. If you decide to take a trip to Marche, don't miss the opportunity to visit the beautiful province of Macerata!
