How Civita d'Antino got its name

The name Civita d'Antino has a great history behind it. The name may come from the original city of Antinum and the Latin term "civitate(m)," which means "city." Alternatively, the toponym Antino may derive from the Latin expression "ante" ("before") or from the linguistic extension "ak't-" ("promontory" or "hill") of the Marsian language root "ak'-" ("sharp"). According to some, the name may be related to the terms of Sostratus (linguistics) of Etruscan origin "Ant" and "-i-no," making the meaning "eagle"-"north wind," justified by the location on the rocky plateau overlooking the Roveto Valley. In the Middle Ages, the center was known as "Civitas Antena," "Civitate de Antena," or simply "Antena." Curious, isn't it?

The history of Civita d'Antino

The contemporary urban nucleus of Civita d'Antino was located in the ancient city of Antinum, an important Roman Municipium in the territory of the Marsi. The city was considered a geographically and militarily strategic point in the Roveto Valley area, not far from the north-western border of the Volsci and the Hernici. Thanks to research, excavations, and studies of a historical, archaeological, and geological nature, we now know more about the history of Civita d'Antino and the ancient city of Antinum. The village was called "Antena" in the course of the eleventh century and gave birth to the Order of St. Benedict Lidano d'Antena, a pioneer of the reclamation of the Agro Pontino. Ecclesiastical documents attest that the churches controlled by the original parish of Santo Stefano were donated to Pope Victor III by the Abbey of Montecassino around the year 1063.
