Civezza
Welcome to Civezza!
Hello everyone, today we will talk about Civezza, a Ligurian municipality surrounded by nature just a few kilometers from the sea. It is located on the ridge of a hill and is part of the province of Imperia. Civezza is famous for its ancient traditions and the beauty of the surrounding landscape. We will give you all the information about the physical geography and history of the city.
Physical geography
The town of Civezza is located in the hinterland of the Riviera di Ponente, south of the city of Imperia. The municipal territory does not have any hamlets and is composed of a single inhabited center. The landscape is characterized by the hills surrounding the town, covered with olea europaea trees. In the past, this territory was mainly agricultural, but since the early 2000s, numerous houses have arisen in the surrounding area, changing its nature.
Mount Faudo, the highest peak in the area, is located a few kilometers north of the town, just above 1150 meters above sea level. In the municipal territory of Civezza, there are also some small streams, including the Lavarghetto.
History
According to historical sources, Civezza was founded in the second half of the 12th century by the community of Porto Maurizio, which sent three families with Venetian origins to colonize this area. Later, the village was subjugated to the third of Torrazza and tied to the Republic of Genoa, suffering the Turkish assault in 1564. This attack led to the construction of the five watchtowers to protect the town. Today, one of these towers, in Piazza Venezia, is still perfectly preserved, while the other two are less visible but equally interesting.
With the fall of the Republic of Genoa, the territory of Civezza was included in the canton of Dolcedo and subsequently the Porto Maurizio. In 1815, after the Congress of Vienna, Civezza was annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia and, since 1861, to the Kingdom of Italy. From 1859 to 1926, the territory was part of the VI portorino district of the Porto Maurizio district, belonging to the Province of Nice, then to the Province of Porto Maurizio and, since 1923, to the Province of Imperia.
The culture of Civezza
Civezza is a city rich in traditions and festivities. Every year on August 16, the patron saint festival of San Rocco, the town's patron saint, is celebrated. During the festival, there are music and dance performances, games for children, and a solemn procession through the streets of the town.
Furthermore, Civezza is famous for the olive oil produced on its territory. Most of the population is dedicated to the cultivation of olive trees and the production of oil. For this reason, the town also hosts an olive oil fair every year, in which local producers present their products.
Civezza is also the perfect place for nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts. There are numerous trails that wind through the hills surrounding the town, offering breathtaking views of the sea and the surrounding mountains.
