Cittiglio
Welcome to Cittiglio, a municipality in the province of Varese
Cittiglio is a small Italian town located in Lombardy, in the heart of the Valleys of Verbano. With its 3795 inhabitants, Cittiglio is part of the Union of Medium Verbano municipalities, and its authentic and rural nature attracts visitors looking for tranquility and natural beauty.
The History of Cittiglio
The town has an ancient history dating back to the early Middle Ages, as can be seen from the precious parchment of 998 preserved in the Lombard diplomatic code. At that time, Cittiglio was called Cistellum and hosted a noble family, the Luini or Luvini of Cittiglio. It was only in 1827 that the first municipal council was elected.
Over the centuries, the town has grown and developed, becoming a sought-after holiday destination since Roman times. In 1902, cycling champion Alfredo Binda was born here, who would become one of the greatest athletes of his generation.
Monuments and Places of Interest
Cittiglio is a small jewel in northern Italy, rich in natural, historical, and artistic treasures. In particular, there are many wonderful churches worth visiting, such as the Church of San Giulio and the Church of San Biagio.
The Church of San Giulio
The Church of San Giulio is located in the center of Cittiglio and was completed in 1643. In the past, it was known as the Church of Santa Maria "in loco Palanzana". Thanks to the contribution of the Luini family, the church is enriched by numerous works of art, including the pulpit, the choir, the organ case, and the pronaos, dating back to the eighteenth century. The church was erected as a parish only in 1788 and has since undergone many renovation and restoration works. Today, after a major restoration of the exteriors, the Church of San Giulio is an authentic masterpiece of religious architecture.
The Church of San Biagio
The Church of San Biagio stands on the hill overlooking the town and is one of the oldest churches in Cittiglio. Its existence is documented since 1235 when it was just a chapel. In the fourteenth century, it became an autonomous parish from the Pieve di Cuvio. The construction dates back to the first Lombard Romanesque period, but has undergone numerous renovations over the centuries. Today, the Church of San Biagio is still a much-loved place of worship for both the citizens of Cittiglio and visitors alike.
