Cittanova, a Calabrian town rich in history and nature

Cittanova is a beautiful town located at the foothills of Aspromonte, in the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria, Calabria. With its 9,775 inhabitants, Cittanova is characterized by the presence of numerous churches and 19th-century buildings, as well as a large public park spanning 2.65 hectares.

Physical geography

Cittanova is located on Quaternary alluvial soils consisting of incoherent sands and gravels, covering the terraces that slope towards the Gulf of Gioia Tauro. The territory is crossed by the eponymous fault that is 30 kilometers long and is also subject to strong earthquakes. Nevertheless, the privileged position of the town, which overlooks the plain of Gioia Tauro from the highest terrace, makes it a place of great charm.

Zòmaro

A small mountain village just 7 kilometers away from Cittanova, Zòmaro is a wonderful place located within the Aspromonte National Park. The flora is rich in beech, holm oak, abies alba, and genisteae, with the Woodwardia radicans, an ancient plant that has withstood the test of time. The fauna is composed mainly of wild boars, squirrels, Meles meles, foxes, Asio otus, and Milvus migrans. Moreover, the Zòmaro plateau is rich in water sources, making it a perfect place for excursions.

Climate

The climate in Cittanova is Mediterranean-type, characterized by the presence of humidity coming from the plain of Gioia Tauro, making it particularly fertile.

History

The birth of Cittanova is linked to the date of August 12, 1618, when the edict of the "New Casale di Cortoladi" was issued by the first prince of Gerace, Girolamo Grimaldi. This town was born with the intention of gathering the populations of the villages of his estates, previously present in the surrounding area but depopulated by earthquakes and epidemics. Also, the New Casale di Cortoladi was to serve as a control of the passage between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Ionian Sea, through the Mercante Pass.

Monuments and places of interest

Cittanova, despite its size, is a town full of charm, with numerous monuments and places of interest. The Church of Santa Maria la Nova, for example, dates back to the 17th century, while that of San Biagio, the city's patron saint, is from the 19th century. The Grimaldi Palace, in the upper part of the town, is an elegant example of noble architecture from the 17th century. The Duomo fountain, located in one of the main squares, dates back to 1700 and is characterized by a curious tenor, that is, the swan holding the vase.

Culture and traditions

Cittanova is a city rich in traditions and culture. Throughout the year, numerous religious festivals are held, including that of San Biagio, the patron saint of the city, and the Corpus Domini festival, during which a large flower carpet is set up along the streets of the village. But not only that: Cittanova is also famous for the production of excellent olive oil and licorice, products that contribute to making the city a reference point for Calabrian food and wine.

Conclusion

In summary, Cittanova is a fascinating town full of surprises. With a unique natural and archaeological heritage, it is the ideal destination for those seeking a peaceful holiday, but at the same time rich in culture and traditions.
