Pistrino

Welcome to Pistrino!

Hello everyone! Today we will talk about Pistrino, a hamlet of the municipality of Citerna in the province of Perugia. This beautiful village is home to about 1,460 inhabitants and is situated on the plain of the Upper Tiber Valley, 295 meters above sea level. The territory of Pistrino is characterized by the presence of the Sovara stream which flows into the Tiber river.

History

The name Pistrino comes from the Latin word "pistrinum", which means "mill". It is rumored that the name of the town originated from the presence of an ancient Roman mill. Coins and other objects dating back to the Roman era have been found in the area near Santa Fista, where one of the most important Roman mills of the time stood.

In the 12th century, the church of San Florido di Città di Castello owned the church of S. Stefano, while the Benedictines of Farneta di Valdichiana owned the church of San Andrea, later called Santa Maria. In the 13th century, the bishop of Città di Castello became its definitive owner.

In 1643, Pistrino was the site of the battle between the Florentines and the Tifernati, which put an end to the dispute between the two neighboring countries.

Football

Pistrino also boasts a great love for football. The football team "Polisportiva Dilettantistica Artiglio Pistrino" was born in 2013 from the merger of "Polisportiva Dilettantistica Pistrino 1972" and "Società Dilettantistica Artiglio Fighille". The playing field where the Pistrino team plays is the "Stadio Generale Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa", and is one of the best second category fields in Umbria.

The current team colors are blue and azure. Pistrino reached the top football series, the "Promotion", twice in its history. Prior to the bankruptcy of the "Società Calcistica Citerna", Pistrino had a great rivalry with it that resulted in very emotional derbies. Now, however, the most important derby is between Pistrino and the Unione Sportiva San Giustino.

The Pistrino company had a separate youth sector until 2013, the year of the merger with Artiglio Fighille.

Economy and events

Pistrino is the most developed area of the municipality of Citerna. The area is renowned for its gastronomic companies, such as the local ham factory. In addition, one of the offices of the national industrial group Gepafim is located here.

Two of the most important events in the town take place in the first weekend of May and the second Sunday of September. The "Festa dei Fiori e dell'Agricoltura" celebrates spring and the beginning of the agricultural season, while the "Sagra dell'Uva" celebrates autumn and the abundance of grapes in the area. The latter is famous above all for the parade of floats that attracts numerous visitors every year.
