History

Prehistory

Cison di Valmarino has a rich prehistoric history, as evidenced by the numerous archaeological finds discovered in different areas of the municipality. Among the most important discoveries are those of the Paleolithic era in Follina, the Mesolithic era in Valmareno, and Bronze Age embryonic fragments.

Ancient times

There are not many traces of human presence in ancient times, but it is believed that the Via Claudia Augusta Altinate passed here in Roman times, which connected Altinum to Germany through the Resia pass. This important civil and military artery crossed the area and reached the Valbelluna through the Praderadego pass.

The Middle Ages

The stable presence of inhabitants developed during the barbarian invasions, and in particular under the Lombard dominion. During this period, the first nucleus of the Castle of Cison was built, then the seat of local lordships. At the end of the 6th century, the feud of Valmareno, which included Cison, Miane, and Follina, was granted to the Diocese of Ceneda by Queen Teodolinda. Later, it passed to the Porcia and Da Camino families until the territory was ceded to the Republic of Venice.

The Serenissima

Only from 1421 did Venice begin to exercise its Podestà over Cison di Valmarino, after a series of claims by the Da Camino family. In 1436, Doge Francesco Foscari entrusted the territory to Erasmo da Narni and Brandolino da Bagnacavallo, renowned condottieri who fought for the Serenissima's cause.

Today, Cison di Valmarino is a place rich in history, culture, and traditions. The traces of past centuries can be admired in the cobbled streets and historic buildings of the old town, such as the Castle of Cison and the Parish Church of San Giovanni Battista.
