San Pietro Bestazzo is famous for its springs, which were once of great economic importance for agriculture and now constitute one of the main attractions of the South Milan Agricultural Park. Furthermore, the territory is characterized by the Po Valley and an altitude of about 123 meters.

The name San Pietro Bestazzo derives from the combination of two words: San Pietro and Bestazzo. The former refers to the saint to whom the church of the village is dedicated, while the latter indicates the hamlet from which it was once independent.

History

San Pietro Bestazzo has ancient origins: evidenced by numerous archaeological finds dating back to the Iron Age and Etruscan civilization, which can be admired at the Archaeological Museum of Milan. Over the centuries, the hamlet of San Pietro Bestazzo has undergone different dominations, passing from the Romans to the Goths, from the Lombards to the Franks. In the seventeenth century, the territory came under the control of the Savoy and only in 1805 became an autonomous municipality, later incorporated into the municipality of Cisliano in 1811.

The hamlet of San Pietro Bestazzo is distinguished by its numerous points of historical and cultural interest: the Church of San Pietro, dating back to the fourteenth century, the Mantegazza Palace, a historic building that housed the first town hall of the village, and the Bestazzo mill, built in the eighteenth century and remained active until the sixties. But the real treasure of San Pietro Bestazzo is represented by the surrounding nature: a vast area of woods that allow you to take walks immersed in the greenery and admire the scenic beauty of the surroundings.

San Pietro Bestazzo hosts numerous traditions and events: the feast of the patron saint, San Pietro Apostolo, celebrated on June 29, the procession that takes place the following Sunday, and the San Pietro Fair, during which local products can be found.

Furthermore, within the South Milan Agricultural Park, you can visit the San Pietro Bestazzo Nature Reserve, an ideal place for nature lovers and native fauna. It is an area of about 45 hectares on the right bank of the Ticino River that houses numerous animal species, from swallows to badgers.

One curiosity about the village concerns its dialect, Milanese: the name San Peder Bestasc, in fact, derives precisely from the dialectal pronunciation of the original name.
