Cisano sul Nèva is a small municipality with a population of approximately 2112 residents and is located in the province of Savona in Liguria. It lies in the valley of the river Nèva, a short distance from its confluence with the Pennavaira river. The village is square-shaped and is surrounded by ancient walls and circular towers that protected it from attacks.
Ancient and medieval history
Cisano has a long history that dates back to the Roman Empire. Remains of a funeral monument dating back to the 2nd century can still be found here. In the 10th century, the village of Chiusano was included in the Aleramici’s domain and, from 1091, among the possessions of Marchese Bonifacio del Vasto. In the 12th century, it may have passed under the rule of the Clavesana lords, and in 1274, the municipality of Albenga acquired the ancient Cisano land and built a new fortified village.
In the following centuries, the village enjoyed broad autonomy under the Rectors, and later the Consuls and Agents. Under the Republic of Genoa, Cisano and the nearby towns were under siege by the troops of the Duchy of Savoy in 1672. In 1797, with the Napoleonic domination, Cisano gained its own administrative autonomy in relation to the Ingua municipality.
The Kingdom of Sardinia and the United Italy
Since 1815, Cisano has been part of the Albenga province of the Kingdom of Sardinia, as established by the Congress of Vienna in 1814. After the unification of Italy in 1861, Cisano changed its name to Cisano sul Nèva, according to a royal decree issued in 1863.
Today, Cisano sul Nèva maintains its ancient charm and offers visitors an authentic experience of Liguria. The village of Conscente is dominated by a medieval castle, while Cenesi is located in a small lateral valley. The historic center of the village still preserves its ancient walls and circular towers.
