The name "Cisano" has ancient origins and it is believed to derive from the Roman period, when rural territories were given to military veterans. Alternatively, it is believed to derive from the Celtic suffix "an" (water), then "amnis" in Latin, referring to the proximity of the Adda river. "Cisano" is the name that was established in the 14th century, but over time it has adapted and changed, until becoming "Cisano Bergamasco" with a royal decree of 1863.
