History

The province of Crotone was established in 1992, along with the province of Vibo Valentia, by dividing the territory previously included in the province of Catanzaro. However, the proposal to create a new province separate from Catanzaro was first made in 1957 by a group of fifty mayors from Crotonese and Rossanese. The request was only formalized by twenty-seven mayors in 1989 and definitively approved in 1992.

Symbols

The provincial coat of arms consists of a blue shield with a gold globe on it, supported by a rose divided unevenly to the right and left of the field; in the lower half of the shield, there is a silver tower.

Physical Geography

The province of Crotone covers an area of ​​1,717.82 km² and includes 27 municipalities. It is located east of the Ionian Sea and borders the province of Cosenza to the northwest and the province of Catanzaro to the southwest.

The province stretches between the Ionian Sea and the Sila Mountains and is perfect for tourists who want to enjoy the beauty of the sea and the mountains. Le Castella (Isola di Capo Rizzuto), home to the famous Le Castella Castle, and Punta Alice (municipality of Cirò Marina) are famous for their beaches and clean waters, and Capo Colonna is a very interesting cultural destination.

In the mountains, there is the town of Trepidò (municipality of Cotronei), where the famous Villaggio Palumbo and Villaggio Pino Grande, a hamlet of Savelli in Sila, are located. In the Sila area at the border of the province of Catanzaro, it includes the mountains: Monte Giove (Calabria), Monte Femminamorta (Sila), and part of Monte Gariglione, and two typically mountain villages, Villaggio Fratta and Villaggio Principe.

The Arbëreshë Community

In the province of Crotone, there is also the Arbëreshë community, a small community that speaks the Albanian dialect widespread in Italy, mainly located in the municipalities of Pallagorio, San Nicola dell'Alto and Carfizzi. In the area, the population regularly speaks the Arbëreshë language, and in public offices, the double validity of Albanian and Italian languages is allowed.
