The province of Crotone was established in 1992, but the proposal to create a new province separate from that of Catanzaro was first put forward in 1957. The city of Crotone has a long tradition in Magna Graecia and in the recent past was also an important industrial center in Calabria. However, since the 1990s, industrial production has decreased due to environmental problems, but the beauty of the territory remains intact and is still a very popular tourist destination.
