History

The history of the province of Imperia is rather complex and dates back to the Treaty of Turin in 1860, when most of the province was annexed to France. Only a part of the territory remained in the Kingdom of Sardinia and became the province of Porto Maurizio, which in 1923 became the current province of Imperia.

In 1945, the territory of the province was occupied by French troops, but thanks to the intervention of US President Harry Truman, France had to withdraw beyond Ventimiglia.
