Ciorlano: the small commune in the province of Caserta

Ciorlano is an Italian commune located in the province of Caserta, in Campania. With 367 inhabitants, it is the commune with the smallest number of residents in the province. Despite its small size, Ciorlano boasts the presence of a wind farm consisting of 10 Vestas V80-2000 kW wind turbines, each equipped with a movable tail and a three-bladed rotor with a diameter of 80 m.

Physical geography

The commune of Ciorlano is located in the hilly area north of the province of Caserta, at 478 meters above sea level. The territory is characterized by undulating topography and drained by small bodies of water, such as the Cervaro River, the Santa Croce stream, and the Vitalba valley.

History

The first historical records date back to the Middle Ages, when the village was known as Zurlanum, later Italianized as Zurlano. In the twelfth century, the fief belonged to the Norman De Villacublai and then to the Sanframondo of Cerreto Sannita in 1300. In 1407, the domain passed to the Kingdom of Naples. From this period, various territorial disputes occurred with neighboring communes. The issue was definitively resolved only in 1810 thanks to the feudal commission.

During World War II, Ciorlano was first occupied by German forces and then liberated by Allied troops. In 1945, the commune passed from the province of Campobasso to that of Caserta.

Ciorlano is the commune with the smallest population in the province of Caserta. Its demographic evolution is constantly decreasing, going from 470 inhabitants in 1981 to the current 367.

The commune of Ciorlano has seen a constant decrease in its population. According to the 1981 census, the commune had 470 inhabitants. This number decreased to 436 in 1991 and to 419 in 2001. According to the latest census in 2011, the population of Ciorlano is 367.

The municipal administration of Ciorlano is led by Mayor Antonio Paparo, elected in 2016. The municipal council is composed of 8 councilors.
