Sasso d'Ombrone: an enchanting hamlet in Cinigiano

Hello everyone! Today I want to tell you about a small hamlet in Cinigiano, Tuscany, which I had the pleasure of visiting: Sasso d'Ombrone. This charming village is located just 9 km from the center of Cinigiano and is situated in the north-western part of the Cinigiano territory.

The history of Sasso d'Ombrone

The history of Sasso d'Ombrone is very interesting. In medieval times, this locality was known as "Sasso di Maremma" and was situated in a strategic point along the Ombrone River. Under the control of the Aldobrandeschi and then the Ardengheschi, it subsequently passed into the hands of Siena, which then ceded it to the Santa Maria della Scala Hospitals and finally to the Buonsignori family. In the 16th century, the village became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Sasso d'Ombrone was also the seat of a commandery of the Knights of Malta.

The monuments of Sasso d'Ombrone

Despite being a small village, Sasso d'Ombrone has some truly beautiful monuments to visit. One of the most important is the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, of medieval origins but with later renovations. There is also the former Church of Sasso d'Ombrone, built in the second half of the 16th century and then converted in modern times, which also housed a nursery during the last century. Let's not forget the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Soccorso, rebuilt in the 19th century, which houses a venerated image of the Madonna. Finally, there is the Church of Santo Stefano in Pignese, a disappeared religious building of medieval origins, which stood in the locality of "Santo Stefano", to the north-east of Sasso d'Ombrone, along the left bank of the Ombrone.

Society in Sasso d'Ombrone

Sasso d'Ombrone is a very small hamlet, but it has a long history behind it. The demographic evolution of the hamlet shows that in 1640 it had 403 inhabitants, a number that then decreased over the centuries until it reached 314 inhabitants in 2011. It should be noted, however, that since 1991 Istat has counted only the inhabitants of the town center, not the hamlet.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Sasso d'Ombrone is a very suggestive village, which is worth visiting at least once in a lifetime. Its history, its monuments and its surrounding nature make this place magical and timeless. If you pass by the area, be sure to make a stop here to appreciate all its beauty!
