Cimbergo: a small municipality in Val Camonica

Cimbergo is a charming municipality located in Val Camonica, in the province of Brescia, Lombardy. The town has only 543 inhabitants and is crossed by the Provincial Roads of the province of Brescia which connects it with neighboring towns such as Paspardo and Ceto.

Physical geography

Territory

Cimbergo is located on the eastern slope of the valley, dominating the middle Val Camonica. The town is surrounded by mountains such as Pizzo Badile Camuno and the Monte Tredenus basin.

Hydrography

The municipality of Cimbergo is enclosed by two streams: the Re di Tredenus to the north and the Figna to the south. These two watercourses used to feed the mills of the town.

Orography

The town is situated on a limestone surface overlooking the Adamello group, which is typically granite. In front of the town are the Concarena and Monte Elto, which are part of the Orobic pre-alps.

The climate of Cimbergo falls into Zone F with an average annual rainfall of 3425 mm.

Origins of the name

The name Cimbergo may derive from the Celtic word "shima" which means "summit" and "berg" which means "height". Alternatively, the name may derive from "cimber," which means "cedar wood," with the addition of "berg" for "plateau."

History

Cimbergo has a very ancient history. The hundreds of rock carvings of Valcamonica present on its territory demonstrate that the area was already inhabited during the neolithic period. Mesolithic artifacts have also been found near Lake Arno.

The church of San Martino di Tours was founded in Cimbergo thanks to the donation of the Valle Camonica to the monks of Tours by Charlemagne. In the 16th century, the church was renamed Santa Maria. In 1158, the name of Cimbergo was recorded in the records of the episcopal table of Brescia.

During the great Camunian rebellion, the Martinengo family of Brescia was replaced by the Antonioli family of Grevo starting from 1288.

Cimbergo witnessed important historical events such as the capture and execution of some Camunian rebels in the 15th century.
