Cimadolmo: a curious named Venetian municipality
Cimadolmo is a municipality in the province of Treviso, in Veneto, with a population of about 3,368 inhabitants. The name of the town dates back to a time when elms, a species of tree, were introduced in the area by the monks of the Abbey of Nonantola to improve reclamation.
Brief history of Cimadolmo
The settlement in this area dates back to the Roman era, with the construction of a military outpost in Stabiuzzo along the Postumia Road. Cimadolmo then became an important trade center in the region, but the continuous flooding of the Piave River led to its decline. During the Renaissance, the Church of San Silvestro Papa in Cimadolmo was destroyed several times. Only in 1884-86 was a dam built to protect the town from floods and promote stable development.
During World War I, Cimadolmo was the site of bitter fighting because of its proximity to the Piave front.
