Hello everyone, today I will talk to you about Cicerale, a municipality located in the province of Salerno in Campania, with a population of approximately 1157 inhabitants.

Physical Geography

Territory

Cicerale is a small agricultural center in the lower Cilento, located on the right side of the high valley of the Alento river, on a spur of Mount San Leo. It is characterized by an elongated structure with a row of houses on either side of a central road. Mount Cicerale is higher up on the same slope.

Climate

The climate of Cicerale is pleasant all year round, with an average temperature in January of +6.8 °C and in August of +24.4 °C.

History

Cicerale already existed during the Norman period and was originally part of the territory of Monteforte Cilento. Later, it belonged to the Sanseverino family, to the Lords of Monteforte, again to the Sanseverino, and finally to the Gentilcore. The Gentilcore created a new Augustinian monastery. Over time, the fief passed to the Primicile.

Economy

Cicerale is an important producer of cereals, olives, table grapes, and vegetables. In addition, the trade of livestock and dried figs, which are exported, is also active. Chickpeas are one of the most important productions of the municipality, from which it takes its name.

Cicerale is served by several provincial roads, including SP 83 which connects Ogliastro Cilento to Trentinara, SP 159/a which connects Stio to Gorga and Cicerale, and SP 159/b which goes from the Cicerale exit to the Alento Dam.

The competences in the field of soil defense are delegated by Campania to the Regional Basin Authority Sinistra Sele. In addition, the municipality is part of the Alento-Monte Stella Mountain Community.
