Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about a small municipality in Liguria, Cicagna, located in the middle of the Fontanabuona valley, east of Genoa. With its 2202 inhabitants, it is a city surrounded by nature, surrounded by forests and mountains that make it a charming place.

The municipal territory of Cicagna is characterized by the presence of two main watercourses: the Lavagna stream, which divides the town into two distinct nuclei, and the Malvaro stream, which flows near the hamlet of Monleone. Among the peaks of the territory, the most famous are Mount Manico del Lume, Mount Pegge, and Mount Lasagna. They are between 700 and 800 meters high and are a great opportunity for those who love hiking and admiring the beautiful view.

The history of Cicagna

The origins of the town date back to the spread of Christianity, as evidenced by one of the first baptismal churches built in the area.

Cicagna was once owned by the Malaspina family, until 1114 when it was annexed to the territories of the Republic of Genoa. Dating back to 1143, the first reference to the city, when it was called Plicania. Throughout its history, Cicagna has always been an important point of reference in the Fontanabuona valley. In the nineteenth century, it was annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia.

The symbols of Cicagna

The coat of arms of Cicagna, with its characteristic shape and banner, was granted by the decree of the President of the Republic on June 30, 1976. The emblem depicts a grapevine and a sheela na gig, one of the oldest symbols of humanity.

Monuments and places of interest

The sanctuary of Our Lady of Miracles, located in the town center, was once a school with a collegiate church of canons, which provided worship services for other churches in the area. The building was looted by the Napoleonic army in 1799. The current sanctuary, dedicated to Our Lady of Miracles, was rebuilt in 1937.

The hamlet of Monleone is home to the Church of Our Lady of the Angels, dating back to the fourteenth century. The hamlet of Pianezza instead hosts the Church of San Rocco, which was elevated to the title of parish in 1922.

Finally, the Church of San Bartolomeo in Serra is another important center of worship located in the municipal territory of Cicagna.

Sculptural monuments of Cicagna

Cicagna also has several sculptural monuments, such as the "Victory Bridge", built in 1937 in memory of the fallen of the First World War and the sailors of the Second World War.
