Querce Al Pino
A fraction of Tuscany
Querce al Pino is a fraction of the municipality of Chiusi, located in the province of Siena, in Tuscany. It is located west of the city of Chiusi, in the Val di Chiana senese, at an altitude of 328 meters. The fraction is delimited to the south by the Astrone stream and to the north by the Gragnano stream. It borders Macciano to the west, Sarteano and Cetona to the south, Chiusi to the east, and Montallese to the north. It is 5 km from the municipal capital and about 80 km from Siena.
An ancient history
Initially known as "Montolle," the village developed as a castle nucleus, although there are no traces of the fortress structure remaining. The castle is mentioned in a diploma from Emperor Otto IV of Brunswick on December 13, 1209, and in a bull of Pope Honorius III on April 7, 1218. The modern center developed following the abandonment of the castle, during the Renaissance, at the point where there was a tabernacle with the effigy of the Madonna, considered miraculous and venerated by the population. In 1586, Bishop Masseo Bardi built a church dedicated to the Name of Mary.
A historical and artistic heritage
At the center of the village stands the Church of the Most Holy Name of Mary, the parish church of the fraction, built in 1586. It was initially held by the Franciscans of the Osservanza, then by the Minor Franciscans and shortly thereafter by the Jesuits. Restored and expanded at the end of the eighteenth century, it preserves precious works from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries inside.
Links with the highway and road network
Querce al Pino is located at the "Chiusi-Chianciano Terme" exit of the A1 motorway, an important connection between northern and southern Italy. Here, the former state road 478 of Sarteano intersects with the provincial road 146 of Chianciano.
