The history of Chiusavecchia

Chiusavecchia was an important feudatory in the hands of the Doria family until 1576, when the territory passed from hand to hand until it was purchased by Duke Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy. Subsequently, in 1609, the territory of Chiusavecchia-Gazzelli was sold to the master auditor of the Duke's Chamber of Accounts Cesare Cernusco, who passed it on to Gregorio Giovannini-Brucco and then to the Tomatis family until the beginning of the 19th century.

With the Napoleonic events, the established municipalities of Chiusavecchia, Olivastri, and Sarola merged between 1801 and 1803 in the Ligurian Republic, becoming the II canton of Val di Maro in the Jurisdiction of the Olive Trees. In 1804, the municipality of Chiusavecchia was abolished and merged with the municipality of Chiusanico.

The Chiusavecchia territory reached its maximum territorial expansion in 1923 with the aggregation of the suppressed municipalities of Arzeno d'Oneglia, Cesio, Lucinasco, Torria, Olivastri, and Sarola.
