Gudon

Gudon: a fraction of Chiusa

Hello everyone! Today I'm talking about Gudon, a beautiful fraction of Chiusa, located in the autonomous province of Bolzano. With its 500 inhabitants, Gudon is about 3 km from the municipal seat and is the only fraction of the municipality located on the left bank of the Isarco.

The toponym

It is said that the settlement already existed in the 10th century, when it was named "Cubidunes" in a document by Bishop Bavaria Lantpert of Frisinga. Over time, the locality was called "Cuvedun" in 1250, "Guvidaun" in 1273 and "Gufidaun" in 1370.

The history of Gudon

The economy of Gudon, like many other localities in the Valle Isarco, is mainly based on tourism. The historical buildings are a real cultural heritage of the village: the parish church of San Martino, for example, dates back to 1280 and is a must-see for those who visit the village. Let's not forget the castles of Summersberg and Koburg, both dating back to the Middle Ages.

But what fascinates most is the medieval palace of Hohenhaus, which housed the property judgment of the Wolkenstein counts. Now it is the seat of various associations and the local library, and despite the years, still manages to amaze visitors with its imposing and fascinating architecture.
