Sant'Anna: a small village to discover
Sant'Anna is a small village in the municipality of Chioggia, located south of the city and surrounded by rivers and canals. With a population of around 3000 inhabitants, it offers a pleasant alternative to the chaotic city life. In this article, we will briefly explore the history of the village and its main attractions.
History
Origins
The origins of Sant'Anna date back to the late 1500s, when the Canal di Valle was dug on the initiative of the Republic of Venice to create a new trade route. The population began to settle in the area and to expand the surrounding agricultural territory.
The municipal experience
In 1807, Sant'Anna became an independent municipality, including the hamlets of Cavanella d'Adige and Ca' Lino. However, due to administrative difficulties, the municipality ceased to exist in 1810 and the territories returned under the jurisdiction of Chioggia. Nevertheless, the hamlet continued to maintain the civil registry offices for several decades.
The parish
The parish of Sant'Anna was established in 1704 by the Bishop of Chioggia, Antonio Grassi, and dedicated to Saint Anne and Saint Gaetano Thiene. Before this date, the population had to go to the Church of San Giorgio Martire in Cavanella d'Adige for Sunday Mass. The right to appoint the parish priest was initially reserved for the Marangoni, Ferro, Lamberti, Fattorini, and Pagan families, but over the years, it was extended to all the head of families in the village. Today, the parish of Sant'Anna and that of San Giorgio Martire are unified in a single pastoral unit.
Territory
The territory of Sant'Anna is predominantly agricultural, but it also offers some small artisanal activities, a post office, and a pharmacy. The new and most populated part of the hamlet develops east of the SS 309 Romea state road, with recently built buildings. The hamlet is located between two rivers, the Brenta and the Adige, and an artificial canal to the west called Canal di Valle. This location makes it ideal for relaxing walks and quiet bike rides.
Attractions
The main attraction of Sant'Anna is the Church of Sant'Anna and San Gaetano Thiene, originally a chapel dedicated to Saint Anne and then expanded to create a parish. The church is still functional, but it is also used for cultural events and theatrical performances. The hamlet also hosts the Antica Chiesa, located in Piazza Baldin Tiziano, which was built thanks to a donation from Father Antonio Marcolongo. The two churches represent two different eras in the history of Sant'Anna and are both fascinating to visit.
Conclusions
The hamlet of Sant'Anna is a corner of peace and tranquillity, ideal for those seeking a break from the city's frenzy. Its location between rivers and canals offers many opportunities for outdoor activities, such as walks and bike rides. The history of the municipality and the parish bear witness to the long tradition of this small hamlet near Chioggia.
