Hello everyone! Are you ready to discover the history and wonders of Chignolo d'Isola? If you don't know yet, this town is located in the province of Bergamo, Lombardy, and has a population of 3376. According to written testimonies, the first settlements in the area date back to Roman times, when Chignolo was part of the territorial district called "Pagus Fortunensis". But the history of the town has been dotted with many events, which is why we decided to tell it through this summary.
The history of Chignolo d'Isola
After the Roman Empire, Chignolo was hit by barbarian invasions that brought looting and terror. It was only with the arrival of the Lombards and Franks in the Middle Ages that the situation stabilized. In the thirteenth century, the Humiliati supported the development of the territory, favoring the spread of wool and leather processing. Chignolo, which had already taken its current name, derived from the Latin word "cuneolus", meaning "wedge", was affected by numerous battles between Guelphs and Ghibellines and had to be fortified.
At that time, a castle built on a small hill overlooked the area. The castle was conquered by the Gonzaga family, who supported the Guelph side, and then by the Visconti of Milan, who fought against the Republic of Venice for control of the area. These conflicts led the population to live in difficulty, to the point that the island was called "the triangle of hunger". Only with the domination of the Serenissima, the situation stabilized and Chignolo was included in the district called "Quadra dell'isola", becoming the capital along with Terno d'Isola.
In 1797, the Cisalpine Republic replaced the Serenissima, which in turn was replaced in 1815 by the Austrians in the Lombardo-Veneto Region. Only with the unification of Italy, there was a significant process of industrialization that allowed significant economic development for the country.
