Chies

Greetings from Chies d'Alpago

Hello everyone! Today I will talk about a beautiful municipality in Veneto: Chies d'Alpago. With its 1251 inhabitants, it is a scattered municipality with administrative headquarters in the village of Lamosano. Chies is part of the Alpago Mountain Union, a mountainous area that hosts breathtaking landscapes.

History

Chies d'Alpago is a territory of ancient origin, whose first traces date back to the Iron Age. At that time, the plain of the Alpago basin was a swamp, so the first villages were founded on the hills. During the Lombard period, the system of rules (entity), an administrative organization still present in Chies, was born.

During the communal period, the whole Alpago area was governed by Belluno. In 1404, like all of Belluno, the territory was conquered by the Serenissima and subsequently governed by the Kingdom of Italy. During World War II, Chies was directly annexed by Nazi Germany. Since the post-war period, the territory has been affected by emigration, which drastically decreased the population.

Monuments and places of interest

The parish church of Chies is dedicated to St. Joseph and was built in 1903. The original eighteenth-century church in turn replaced an older chapel. In 2009, a herd of 25 yak was imported from the East and released in the Chies area to counter the advance of the woods and prevent the formation of fires. The yak would also become a tourist attraction.

Heraldry

The emblem of Chies d'Alpago features the tower of the Bongaio Castle on the right and the sheep on the left, which represents the main pastoral activity of the municipality.

Geography

The territory of Chies is located along the Tesa valley, at the foot of Monte Teverone. The territory is predominantly mountainous and consists of plateaus, where the main villages of the municipality are located: Lamosano, Molini, Codenzano, San Martino d'Alpago, Irrighe, Funes, Carpinetto and Palughetto. The main rivers are the Tesa, Borsoia, Fermega, Funesia and Tessina.

Society

Since the post-war period, the municipality has undergone strong emigration, which has led to a reduction in population. However, the municipality offers an unspoiled natural environment and rich opportunities for those who want to escape the stress of the cities.

Demographic evolution

The demography of the municipality has been negatively influenced by strong emigration, which has led to a reduction in population.
