San Sigismondo: history, architecture and nature in Val Pusteria.

History

San Sigismondo has ancient origins, dating back to 1050-1065 when it was called "Burin" and later "Pewern" and "Pæuren". The name change, which occurred in the fifteenth century, was due to the particular interest that Duke Sigismondo of Austria had in the village. It was an autonomous commune until 1929.

Monuments and places of interest

From an architectural point of view, San Sigismondo is based on the original South Tyrolean buildings, the Maso. The parish church, built by the Austrian Duke Sigismondo, represents the main point of interest. Inside there is the oldest and best-preserved "a portelle" altar in Tyrol, dating back to around 1430 and probably commissioned in honor of the birth of Sigismondo. The exterior features a monumental fresco of St. Christopher.

Another point of interest is the Church of Our Lady (in German ''Stöcklkapelle'') dating back to 1621 and built in Baroque style. On the outskirts of the village, there are the "baths of Ilistra" (in German ''Ilstern''), where there were once thermal treatment facilities. Nearby is the Church of St. Ulrich (in German ''St. Ulrich'') dating back to 1491 and excellently preserved.

Gastronomy and activities

San Sigismondo offers various options from a gastronomic point of view, with typical restaurants and local dishes. The village is also an interesting destination for hikers, as there are several mountain trails to explore. In addition, its location allows for trips to tourist destinations such as San Candido or Dobbiaco.

Demographic evolution

San Sigismondo has seen demographic evolution over the years, with a decline until the 1950s. Subsequently, the population started to grow again, also thanks to an increase in tourism.

Conclusion

San Sigismondo is a charming small village, rich in history and architectural beauty. Its location makes it an ideal destination for those seeking peace and quiet in the midst of nature, but also for those who want to go hiking and on tourist trips. If you are in the area, we highly recommend visiting it!
