Casteldarne Castle: the "castle of honor" in Val Pusteria

Welcome to Casteldarne Castle, an imposing fortress dating back to the 12th century located in a spectacular position above the Rienza river and at the foot of the Getzen mountain in Val Pusteria, in the province of Bolzano. Also known as "Schloss Ehrenburg" in German, the castle owes its name to the homonymous hamlet of the municipality of Chienes and was built for the use and residence of the Künigl family for more than 700 years. Let's see all the details together 💬.

Description

The castle covers an area of about 45,000 square meters and features an older part from the 12th century on the southern side and an architectural Baroque expansion from the 18th century on the eastern side. Besides the defensive aspect, the inner courtyard is undoubtedly one of the most valuable elements of the castle. The courtyard, which represents the beating heart of the entire manor, was commissioned by the noble Caspar Künigl in the Renaissance and is surrounded by semi-circular arches supported by granite columns with square capitals. The courtyard, which has undergone some modifications over the centuries, represents a true artistic masterpiece that blends perfectly with the fascinating and romantic atmosphere of the place.
