Turin is an Italian municipality with 842,472 inhabitants, and is the capital of the Piedmont region and of the Metropolitan City of Turin. It is the fourth largest Italian municipality by population and the heart of a metropolitan area that has about 1.7 million inhabitants.

Turin is one of the major hubs for Universities, Arts, Tourism, Science, and Culture in Italy and it is one of the major hubs for industrial production in the country. Its territory includes areas and buildings that are part of two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Turin is a city with a two-thousand-year history, probably founded around the 3rd century BC by the Taurini and transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus with the name of Iulia Augusta Taurinorum in the 1st century BC. After being the capital of an important Duchy of Turin, it came under the nominal lordship of the Savoy in the 11th century. In 1861, Turin became the first capital city of the Kingdom of Italy.

Turin hosts many international events and festivals such as the Turin International Exposition of 1911, the XX Winter Olympic Games in 2006, the ATP Finals, the Festival of Science, and many others.

Turin has also been the birthplace of some world-renowned Made in Italy products, such as vermouth, Gianduiotto chocolates, breadsticks, and espresso coffee. It is the center of the Italian automotive industry, an important hub for publishing, banking and insurance, information technology, cinema, gastronomy, space sector (astronomy), industrial design, sports, fashion, and artificial intelligence.

Its constant growth in international importance has led Turin to become a global city (the third Italian city after Milan and Rome) in the Gamma category.

Turin is located in the plain area delimited by the Stura di Lanzo, Sangone and Po rivers. Facing the mouth of some Alpine valleys, the city is well connected with neighboring France through the Frejus, Valli di Lanzo and Val Sangone tunnels.

The city is characterized by a continental climate influenced by its proximity to the Alps. The temperatures in summer are warm but not excessive, and in winter, they are cold. In spring and autumn, the temperatures are pleasant, and the days are very sunny.

Turin is rich in museums and places of interest. The Egyptian Museum is one of the most famous and richest in the world, hosting numerous ancient Egyptian artifacts. The National Cinema Museum is also one of the most important in the world, dedicated to the history of cinema and its technologies.

Turin is famous for its Savoy residences. The Royal Palace and the Valentino Castle are just two examples of fascinating and beautiful architecture. In the city center, many squares can be admired, such as Piazza San Carlo, Piazza Castello, and the evocative Piazza Vittorio Veneto.

Turin is a city that also stands out for its cuisine and gastronomy. Among the typical dishes are the Bagna Cauda, a kind of fondue with anchovies and garlic, Agnolotti al plin, small ravioli filled with meat, Fricandò, veal cooked in a stew with vegetables and spices, and many other delicious dishes.

Wines

The territory around Turin is very fertile and produces some of the best Italian wines. Among the most famous are Barolo, Barbaresco, and Nebbiolo.

Sport

Turin is a reference point for sports in Italy and internationally. The city is famous above all for soccer, with its two teams: Juventus and Torino. Moreover, the city hosts numerous sporting events, such as the XX Winter Olympic Games in 2006 and the ATP Finals.
