Welcome to Chianciano Terme!

Hello everyone! Today I'll talk to you about Chianciano Terme, a beautiful thermal and therapeutic city in the province of Siena, Tuscany. With a population of 6,896 inhabitants, Chianciano Terme is located in the southeastern sector of Tuscany, near the borders of Umbria and Lazio.

A thermal and therapeutic city

The thermal waters of Chianciano Terme are said to have been beneficial since the times of the Etruscans and the Romans. These people had built an important settlement in this area. Today, Chianciano Terme is a renowned thermal and therapeutic destination in Italy, with developed lodging facilities and numerous beneficial properties. This town extends between the Val d'Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004, the wine hills of Montepulciano, and the Renaissance attractions of Pienza.

Ancient history

The territory of Chianciano Terme boasts a long ancient history, with traces of settlements dating back to the Bronze and Iron Ages. In particular, the Eneolithic settlement of Chiarentana, at the foot of Mount Cetona, has yielded the foundations of some huts, ceramic remains, and obsidian materials. These objects testify to a rich commercial exchange with the Pontine Islands, in particular with the island of Palmarola, a place of obsidian production.

The Necropolis of La Foce

In these hills overlooking the Val d'Orcia, a rich and populous settlement was formed at the end of the Iron Age. Recently, the Archaeological Groups of Italy have begun excavating a large area located in the La Foce district, bringing to light over 700 tombs dating from the early 7th century BC to the late 6th century BC. These are tombs in the shape of a trench, chest tombs, and chamber tombs, containing numerous valuable objects.

A city in continuous evolution

Over the years, Chianciano Terme has undergone a great transformation, thanks to the construction of an aqueduct, a bottling plant, and the restructuring of the Acqua Santa plant in the period 1915-1920. The post-war period saw further increases in lodging facilities and the transformation of thermal establishments into modern therapeutic cities.

Chianciano Terme is classified as "zone 3" (low seismicity) and "zone E" for climatic classification. Moreover, according to Ibimet CNR 2002, it has high atmospheric diffusivity.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Chianciano Terme is a city rich in ancient history, with a long tradition of beneficial properties of thermal waters. Today, it is a modern and ever-evolving city, with numerous lodging and therapeutic facilities that make it one of the best thermal and therapeutic destinations in Italy.
