Chianche has a population of about 474 inhabitants and is situated on a hill in the Valle del Sabato, at an altitude that ranges from 350 to 400 meters above sea level. In this text, I will tell you a little about the geography, history, monuments, places of interest, and symbols of our beautiful municipality.

Physical geography

The municipal territory of Chianche is made up of three inhabited nuclei: Chianche, Chianchetelle, and San Pietro in Delicato. The cultivated areas are somewhat reduced, but we can boast beautiful vineyards for the production of one of the most famous D.O.C.G. wines, Greco di Tufo. There are also abundant oak and chestnut forests, and we also have an important water source in the locality of Greci.

Chianche: geography, history, monuments, and symbols.

History

The city of Chianche has existed since at least the 13th century and was originally a hamlet dependent on Montefusco. The famous castle that dominates the village dates back to the Norman conquest of southern Italy in the 11th century, although it was only mentioned in a document from the early 14th century. Over the centuries, the fiefdom passed from one family to another. Chianchetelle, once an autonomous municipality, was enfeoffed to the Tocco family and then passed to the Gambacorta, Di Capua, and Salerno families.

Symbols

The coat of arms of the municipality of Chianche consists of a double-headed eagle charged with a silver shield inside which there is a red band, three narrow bands held by a ring in the upper part, three flowers in the central part, and a flower at the tip of the shield.
