History of Piazze

Piazze has a rich history of significant events. In the past, the village was part of the feud of Camporsevoli, and then received the decree of Napoleon Bonaparte, who included it as a hamlet of Cetona in 1808. In 1833, Piazze was inhabited by 362 people. Today, the hamlet has around 400 residents.

Monuments and Places of Interest

Religious Architecture

The churches of Piazze are of notable historical and architectural interest. The church of San Lazzaro, known as San Lazzaro alle Piazze, is the oldest place of worship in the hamlet. Built in the early XVI century, it once housed a parish before being deconsecrated after World War II. Since 2005, it has become the civic center of Piazze. The church of Maria Immacolata, instead, is the current parish church, built in 1962 next to the homonymous institute-nursery. The chapel of San Giuseppe al Tamburino completes this religious triptych.

Civil Architecture

Among the civil architectures, the nursery school Maria Immacolata, dating back to 1952, the clock tower and the historic Villa Argentina stand out. The latter is known for having hosted the famous doctor Alberto Rinaldi, who treated numerous illustrious figures, such as the renowned composer Arturo Toscanini.

Other Monuments

The monument to the fallen, located in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, is a travertine tombstone in memory of the fallen of the First World War. It was inaugurated in 1924, thanks to the sponsorship of the Marquess Domenico Grossi di Camporsevoli. In 1987, a plaque was added that also remembers the fallen of the Second World War.
