Cetara: history, flavors, and crystalline sea of the Amalfi Coast.

Physical Geography

Territory

Cetara is a truly magical place that offers breathtaking views and unforgettable sunsets thanks to its unique and privileged location. It opens like a fan on the narrow plain at sea level, with a pebble beach and fishermen at work waving their nets. The municipal territory is characterized by lush hills that plunge into the sea and suggestive paths that wind along the irrigation canals. There is nothing more relaxing than losing oneself in the beauty of nature, admiring the mountains, hidden coves, beaches, and inlets that follow one another along the coast.

Climate

Cetara has a typical Mediterranean climate, with long and hot summers and mild but humid winters. The temperatures are constantly mild and never harsh, also thanks to the protection offered by the surrounding mountains. Perfect, therefore, to enjoy all the activities that the area offers, from hiking to swimming, diving, and fishing.

Origins of the name

According to experts, the name Cetara derives from the Latin ''Cetaria'', a kind of tuna fishery, or from the term ''cetari'', fish sellers. The town has always been a fishing village with a strong culinary tradition based on fresh fish. However, there are other theories about the origins of the name: some hypothesize that it derives from the term ''caeditaria'', meaning "deforested place", or from the term ''citrus'', lemon, cultivated since ancient times in this area. What is certain is that the history of Cetara is very ancient and fascinating.

History

Cetara was once a fortress of the Saracens and witnessed the presence of the Franciscans, who contributed to making the life of the town more cultural and moral. The construction of watchtowers to ward off the Arab danger was a crucial episode in the history of the village, which still preserves the imposing monumental convent complex. In 1997, the municipal territory was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as part of the Amalfi Coast.

The treasure of Cetara: the Colatura di Alici

But now let's move on to the true specialty of the village: the Colatura di Alici di Cetara. This unique sauce in the world is a kind of golden and transparent liquid that takes its name from the Latin verb "colare", meaning to filter. The secret of this smoked fish sauce lies in the millennial tradition of the Cetara fishermen, who use only Anchovies of the Tyrrhenian Sea, and in the artisanal method of production. The fish is first washed and salted, then pressed in barrels and left to mature for at least a year. At the time of extraction, the strained sauce is reduced so that from 20 kilos of Anchovies, only two liters of Colatura are obtained. A costly product, but one to be absolutely enjoyed, perhaps accompanied by a plate of spaghetti with tomato sauce, the perfect pairing!

What to see in Cetara

Cetara is an ideal destination for those who want to enjoy a vacation of relaxation and culture. The village boasts a wide range of attractions, including the Museum of the Sea, housed in the ancient watchtower, and the Church of San Pietro Apostolo, built on the sea cliff in the sixteenth century. But the real attraction of Cetara is its crystal clear sea, perfect for water sports such as diving or underwater fishing. Finally, one cannot leave Cetara without first admiring the breathtaking view from the Norman Tower, located on the hill overlooking the town. The 360-degree view of the entire Amalfi Coast is simply unforgettable!

Conclusion

In conclusion, Cetara is an enchanting place to discover the true essence of the Amalfi Coast. Amidst crystal clear sea, millennial traditions, and ancient history, it is the ideal place for a vacation of relaxation, sports, culture, and good cuisine.
