The Province of Macerata

Hello friends! Today I want to tell you about the province of Macerata, a central Italian province located in the Marche region and with a population of over 300,000 inhabitants. The capital of this province is the city of Macerata.

Physical geography

The province of Macerata is the largest in the Marche region, with an area of over 2,700 square kilometers. It is located on the Adriatic coast and borders to the west with the province of Perugia. It is the only province in Marche that borders with three other provinces of the same region, namely Ancona to the north, Ascoli Piceno to the southwest, and Fermo to the south.

The province of Macerata is predominantly hilly, with 67.7% of the territory corresponding to hills. The rest of the area is mountainous and is located in the Maceratese Apennines. Three unions of municipalities are located in the mountains: Unione Montana Potenza Esino Musone, Unione Montana Marca di Camerino, and Unione Montana dei Monti Azzurri.

History

The province of Macerata was born from the homonymous delegation of the Papal States in 1860, extending its jurisdiction with the annexation of the delegation of Camerino and the municipality of Visso. Over the years, it has undergone many territorial modifications, particularly cessions in favor of the province of Ancona. In 1929, it received the municipality of Visso from neighboring Perugia.

Economy

The province of Macerata is home to many small but highly specialized companies, especially in the footwear sector. In 2006, the Bank of the Province of Macerata was established.

Infrastructure and transportation

Before the advent of the automobile, the province of Macerata was crossed by the historical roads leading to Rome, many of which are still very ancient today. The most important of these was the Via Lauretana, which crossed Marche from Foligno to reach the sanctuary of the Holy House in Loreto, and then continued to the port of Ancona.

With the arrival of trains, the Rome-Ancona railway took away the ambitions of the province to see a direct artery to the Italian capital realized. However, the province of Macerata is still served by several important railway stations along the Adriatic line, such as those of Macerata, Matelica, and San Severino Marche.

Conclusions

The province of Macerata is a beautiful region that offers many opportunities for those who want to visit or live there. With its green hills, the beautiful Adriatic Sea, and historic cities, this province is a welcoming and hospitable place. I hope that one day you can visit this incredible place to discover everything it has to offer. Thank you for reading my article!
